This policy applies to Azivane, the compass app for Wear OS watches and Android phones distributed on Google Play, including Azivane Pro, its optional in-app purchase. Azivane is developed by Northglance, a business name of 1000577668 Ontario Incorporated.

Summary

Azivane does not collect personal data, and it does not share your data with anyone. Apart from the Azivane Pro requests to Google Play described below, everything Azivane reads or keeps about you stays on the device where Azivane read it: your watch, or your phone if you use Azivane there. Azivane on your phone and Azivane on your watch share none of your data. It has no internet permission, no account of its own, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Azivane is free. Azivane Pro is an optional one-time purchase made through Google Play: Google handles the payment under its own terms. Azivane reads from Google Play, on your watch or phone, only the price, whether you own Azivane Pro or its payment is pending, and Google Play’s own reference for your purchase, which it hands back to Google Play to confirm the purchase. It keeps on that device only its own record of Azivane Pro (whether Google Play said you own it, its payment is pending or you do not own it, when it said so, and when you last started a purchase; see What is stored), not the purchase reference. If you buy Azivane Pro, Google Play also gives us a record of the order (see Third parties).

What Azivane uses, and why

  • Approximate location (optional). Magnetic north and true north differ by an angle called magnetic declination, which depends on where you are. If you allow approximate location, Azivane reads the approximate location your watch already knows. While Azivane has none saved yet, it also asks the watch for its current approximate location when you allow location and each time you open the compass, its settings or its Qibla page, until it has one. Azivane never asks for your precise location. It uses the location on the watch to work out that angle, so the compass can point to true north. It also works out how strong Earth’s magnetic field should be at that place, so the compass can tell you when metal or a magnet nearby is disturbing the reading. Azivane uses the same saved location, on the watch, to work out the Qibla direction (the bearing to the Kaaba in Mecca) and, with Azivane Pro, where the sun and moon are, when they rise and set, and when the Auto night dial turns red. Before Android asks for the permission, Azivane shows a page that explains why it asks and that your location stays on the watch. If you do not allow it, Azivane shows magnetic north and labels it as magnetic on the screen, and it shows no Qibla and no sun and moon.
  • Compass sensor. Azivane reads your watch’s motion and magnetic sensors to work out which way you are facing. The readings are used on the watch as they arrive and are not kept, except the last heading (see below).
  • Notifications (optional). Live heading (below) needs Azivane’s notifications. Azivane asks for permission to show them on its first-run Live heading page, if they are not allowed yet; you can say no and use everything else. While live heading runs, Azivane shows a silent ongoing notification, “Live heading is on”, in your watch’s notification list, so you can see that it is running. Tapping it opens Azivane’s settings. Azivane adds nothing else to your watch face. If you turn Azivane’s notifications off, live heading stops.
  • Live heading on the watch face. While Azivane’s notifications are allowed, Azivane runs in the background so it can keep the Compass heading complication on your watch face up to date, and, with Azivane Pro, the Qibla complication if you added it. There is no separate on/off switch. It does not start on its own before you have answered Azivane’s first-run Live heading page. It reads the compass sensor only while the watch screen is on. While notifications are allowed, it starts again after the watch restarts or Azivane is updated.
  • Vibration. For the haptic ticks as you turn, the click when you lock a bearing and, with Azivane Pro, a soft buzz in the compass when you turn to face the Qibla while the Qibla mark is shown on the compass (unless you turn off “Buzz when facing it” on the Qibla page).
  • Google Play purchases. Azivane uses Google Play’s billing permission to offer Azivane Pro and to check whether you own it, through the Google Play app on your watch (see “What leaves your watch”). Google handles the payment under its own terms; on a watch, Google Play may finish the payment on your paired phone. Azivane never receives your payment details.
  • Names for saved bearings (Azivane Pro). When you save a bearing, you pick a name such as Car or Camp, or say or type one with your watch’s own input screen. That screen is part of your watch, not of Azivane (voice typing may use a speech service such as Google’s, under its own terms); Azivane receives only the text.

What is stored, and where

  • All of it is kept only in Azivane’s private storage on your watch: the last approximate location it used (latitude and longitude, if you allowed location); your last heading, whether it was true or magnetic north, and the time it was read; the bearing you locked, with the north it was taken in (the declination angle, or magnetic north); your saved bearings (up to 12, each with its name, its bearing and the north it was saved in) and which of them is locked; whether you own Azivane Pro or its payment is pending, when Google Play last answered, a count of recent “not owned” answers and when they began, and when you last started a purchase; and your choices in the app (for example which first-run pages you answered, whether the Qibla shows on the compass, the Qibla buzz and the night dial setting). Azivane also notes which watch face slots show its Qibla complication and whether its tile is added, so it updates them only while they are shown.
  • The Google Play Billing Library inside Azivane may also keep its own diagnostic records in Azivane’s private storage. They cannot leave your watch (see below), and clearing Azivane’s storage or uninstalling Azivane deletes them.
  • Azivane turns off Android’s backup of its data to your Google account and does not copy it anywhere itself. Your purchase of Azivane Pro itself is recorded by Google Play with your Google account, under Google’s terms.
  • Your heading is passed, on the watch, to the watch face you chose when you add the Compass heading complication to it. With Azivane Pro, the Qibla complication passes the Qibla direction (and, while the heading is live, how far to turn) to the watch face you add it to, and the compass tile shows your last heading and when it was read, your locked bearing and its name, the Qibla bearing when you show the Qibla on the compass, and the next sunrise or sunset. Your watch shows these on the watch.

What leaves your watch

Apart from the Azivane Pro requests below, nothing that Azivane reads or keeps about you leaves your watch: not your location, your heading, your bearings, your settings or Azivane’s record of Azivane Pro. Azivane has no internet permission, so it cannot send anything over the internet, to us or to anyone else.

Google Play and Azivane Pro. For Azivane Pro, Azivane talks only to the Google Play app on your watch, which deals with Google under Google’s own terms and privacy policy. Azivane asks it whether your Google account owns Azivane Pro: when you open the compass and Azivane’s last answer is missing or more than six hours old (more often while a payment is pending or for a day after you start a purchase), when you open the Azivane Pro page while Azivane Pro is not unlocked, when you tap Check again on it and, after you tap Unlock, every few seconds for a few minutes while that page waits for Google Play, and when you tap Restore purchase. While Azivane Pro is not unlocked, the Azivane Pro page also asks Google Play for the price. When you tap Unlock, Google Play shows its own purchase screens. After a purchase, Azivane confirms to Google Play that it received it, as Google Play requires. These requests name Azivane Pro, or ask only for Azivane’s own one-time purchases (a confirmation also carries Google Play’s own reference for that purchase); Azivane adds none of your data and no identifier of its own.

The billing library’s diagnostics. Azivane uses the Google Play Billing Library for these requests. That library includes Google’s own diagnostic logging, which would send reports to Google over the internet. Azivane removes the internet permission that this logging needs, so its reports cannot leave your watch. Azivane does have Android’s network state permission, which the library’s scheduled job needs on newer versions of Android. It lets an app read the state of the watch’s network connections, such as whether one is available; Azivane’s own code does not use it, and it cannot send anything.

Privacy policy. If you tap Privacy policy in the About part of Azivane’s settings, Azivane asks your paired phone, through the Wear OS connection provided by Google Play services, to open the web address of this policy. Only that address is sent, and only to your own phone.

Azivane on your phone

Azivane also runs on Android phones, as its own app in the same Google Play listing. It works on its own, with or without a watch. The sections above describe the watch; on the phone:

  • Approximate location (optional). If you allow approximate location, Azivane uses it only on the phone: for true north and its check for metal or a magnet nearby, for the Qibla direction and, with Azivane Pro, for the sun and moon and the Auto night mode. Before Android asks for the permission, Azivane shows a page that explains why it asks and that your location never leaves the phone. Azivane never asks for your precise location on the phone. It keeps the last approximate location in its private storage on the phone and uses it only while location is allowed: once you remove the permission, Azivane stops using it and deletes it the next time it opens. Uninstalling Azivane or clearing its storage deletes it at once. Without location, the compass shows magnetic north.
  • Compass sensors. Azivane reads your phone’s motion and magnetic sensors to work out which way the phone points. The readings are used as they arrive and are not kept. Azivane saves its own calibration of the phone’s magnetic sensor (an offset, and the strength and dip of the magnetic field around you) on the phone.
  • What is stored on the phone. Only in Azivane’s private storage on the phone: that calibration, the bearing you locked and your saved bearings (each keeps only the angle between true and magnetic north it was taken with, not the place), your choices in the app, and Azivane’s record of Azivane Pro. The Google Play Billing Library may also keep its own diagnostic records there; they cannot leave the phone. Nothing is backed up to your Google account or moved to a new phone by a device transfer: a new phone starts fresh, and Azivane Pro comes back when Azivane first checks with Google Play, or when you tap Restore purchase, on the Google account that bought it.
  • Your watch. The phone and the watch share none of your data: not your location, your heading, your bearings or your settings. When you open Azivane’s settings, the Azivane Pro page or “Azivane on your watch”, the phone asks Google Play services on the phone itself which of your connected watches have Azivane. Their names are shown on that page and are not stored. Install on watch, only when you tap it, asks Google Play on your watch to open Azivane’s page there. The Privacy policy row on the watch opens this policy on your phone.
  • No notifications, nothing in the background. Azivane shows no notifications on the phone and has no vibration permission: its ticks use your phone’s standard touch feedback. Azivane’s own code runs nothing in the background; the sensors stop a few seconds after the compass leaves the screen. The only background work is the Google Play Billing Library’s own diagnostics job, which cannot send anything.

What leaves your phone. Azivane has no internet permission on the phone either, and sends nothing itself. For Azivane Pro, Azivane asks the Google Play app on your phone whether your Google account owns it, in the same situations as on the watch (described above), and Google Play shows its own purchase screens. One purchase unlocks Azivane Pro on both your phone and your watch. Install on watch sends only Azivane’s Google Play address to your own watch, when you tap it. The privacy policy link opens this page in your phone’s browser. Nothing else that Azivane reads or keeps leaves your phone.

Your choices and deleting your data

  • Live heading runs while Azivane’s notifications are allowed. To stop it, open Azivane’s settings, tap “Live heading on watch face” and turn off its notifications. You can also turn off Azivane’s notifications in your watch’s settings, or uninstall Azivane. To start it again, allow Azivane’s notifications, for example from Azivane’s settings.
  • You can allow or remove the location and notification permissions at any time in your watch’s settings. Without location, the compass shows magnetic north, there is no Qibla and no sun and moon, and the Auto night dial stays off. If you remove the location permission later, Azivane stops using the saved location for the Qibla and the sun and moon, deletes it the next time it opens or reads the compass, and goes back to magnetic north. Saved bearings keep the north they were saved in until you delete them.
  • The Qibla mark on the compass is off until you turn on “Show on the compass” on the Qibla page in Azivane’s settings, and you can turn it off there again. Tapping Azivane’s Qibla complication on your watch face also shows the mark, until you next open Azivane from your watch’s app list. With Azivane Pro, the Qibla buzz works only while the mark is shown, and you can turn it off with “Buzz when facing it” on the same page. You can delete any saved bearing on the Saved bearings page.
  • On your phone, you can allow or remove the location permission in your phone’s settings. To delete everything Azivane stored on the phone, clear its storage in your phone’s app settings, or uninstall it there.
  • Restore purchase, in Azivane’s settings and on the Azivane Pro page, asks Google Play again whether your Google account owns Azivane Pro, for example on another watch. Refunds are made through Google Play; the app itself cannot refund. After a refund, Azivane turns Pro off once Google Play has said twice, at least an hour apart, that Azivane Pro is not owned.
  • To delete everything Azivane stored, clear its storage in your watch’s app settings, or uninstall Azivane. This also deletes Azivane’s record of Azivane Pro: your purchase stays with your Google account at Google Play, and Azivane asks Google Play again the next time you open the compass, or when you tap Restore purchase. Until Google Play answers, Azivane Pro stays locked on that watch. We hold no copy of anything Azivane stores. Order records for Azivane Pro are kept by Google Play and in our Google Play reports (see Third parties); email us with any question about them (see Contact).

Third parties

Azivane does not send your data to any server of its own or to any other company; apart from the Google Play requests and the privacy policy address described above, it sends nothing to Google. It contains no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting library. Google Play handles the download of the app, and the purchase, payment and any refund of Azivane Pro, under Google’s own terms and privacy policy. If you buy Azivane Pro, Google Play gives us, as the developer, a record of the order: the order number, date and status, the product, the amount and tax, the device model, and the buyer’s country and, depending on the country, state or province, city and postal code. We use these records only for our accounts and taxes and to answer refund requests or questions you send us. They do not include your payment details. We keep our own copies of these records for as long as tax law requires us to keep business records, usually seven years, and then delete them. Google Play also keeps them, and shows them to us in our developer account, under Google’s own terms and privacy policy. Azivane includes the Google Play Billing Library only to talk to the Google Play app on your watch; as explained above, the library’s own diagnostic logging cannot send anything.

Children

Azivane is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
